Secure Detention

The RRVJC has 8 secure beds which can be used for housing male and female adolescents with delinquency charges, court holds, probation violations, behavioral evaluations and program placements.  During the initial months of reopening, secure detention placements from non-member counties may be limited to allow employees to become acclimated with operational changes and to closely monitor the milieu of the facility.

If you are in need of a secure detention bed, please contact RRVJC Staff at 218-470-8327.  Please note, Minnesota Statute 260B.176 requires the completion of a risk assessment instrument prior to placement in a secure detention setting to determine whether a child should be released or detained.  This risk assessment must be completed prior to transport or upon arrival to the facility.  RRVJC staff will gather needed information from placement agencies to score the risk assessment instrument.

Non-Secure Detention

The Red River Valley Juvenile Center (RRVJC) located in Crookston, MN has been serving Northwest Minnesota since 1997.  The RRVJC provides placement options to include (8) non-secure detention and (8) secure detention beds for male and female adolescents from 10 to 18 years of age.

The RRVJC is operated by Tri-County Community Corrections and accepts referrals from Minnesota and North Dakota.  The facility is licensed by the Minnesota Department of Corrections and is Title IV-E eligible through the Minnesota Department of Human Services.

Non-secure placements include status offenses, Children in Need of Protective Services (CHIPS) holds, voluntary placements, behavioral evaluations and programming.

Secure detention placements for up to (90) days include new criminal citations, court holds, probation violations, behavior evaluations and programming.  The facility can also provide secure detention services for extended jurisdiction juvenile matters up to the age of 21.

Facility programming utilizes a person-centered approach by targeting risk and need areas identified through the use of assessments, such as the Youth Level of Service/Case Management Inventory (YLS/CMI) or Casey Life Skills.  Individualized case plans are developed based on specific risk/need areas identified in these assessments.

Core programming includes the use of cognitive behavioral programming using the Decision Points curriculum and Carey Guides to target specific risk behaviors and attitudes to help support positive adolescent behavioral changes.

Additional programming includes Life Skills, (6) hours of daily education provided by the local school district, Sexual Health Education, Aggression Replacement Training and Resiliency Group.
